#PCAFStories | Data gathering activities for the evaluative study on dairy feed assessment of the Philippine Council for Agriculture and Fisheries (PCAF) continued from May 25–28, 2026, with Iloilo serving as one of the sites for the second leg of field data collection for the study.During the activity, the team visited a total of 17 dairy farms in the province to gather information on feed resources, feeding practices, forage availability, and animal condition as part of the study’s broader assessment of dairy feed quality and sustainability in the Philippines. The study aims to generate evidence-based insights that can help identify sustainable feeding strategies to strengthen dairy production systems, improve animal health and productivity, and support farmer livelihoods nationwide.The study adopts a “Longitudinal Panel Approach,” where the same group of farms is observed across three climatic periods to determine how seasonal changes affect feed resources, animal body condition, and milk production. The recently concluded Iloilo data gathering served as the final field activity for Period 2 (March–May), which represents the hot-dry season characterized by heat stress, feed scarcity, and increased use of alternative feed sources and crop residues among farmers. Using the same questionnaire and observational protocols throughout the study ensures consistency in tracking changes across seasons.“This is the first time PCAF will fully implement an evaluative study,” shared John Errasmus Mari Montiano, Project Development Section - Planning, Monitoring, and Knowledge Management Division technical staff, and one of the study’s field researchers. “This differs from previous commissioned studies, in which PCAF only assisted with data gathering.
