At the heart of Oriental Mindoro, where agriculture is not just a livelihood but a way of life, Mr. Junior Supnet stands as a beacon of hope for Indigenous Peoples (IP) engaged in farming and fishing. As the Regional Agricultural and Fishery Council’s (RAFC) Sectoral Committee Representative on IP, he has dedicated himself to ensuring that his community gains access to the opportunities and resources they rightfully deserve.
Mr. Supnet is a proactive leader who tirelessly raises awareness among his fellow IP members about government programs and projects available for farmers and fishers. Understanding the barriers that often prevent indigenous communities from benefiting from these initiatives, he has become a staunch advocate, ensuring that they are informed and empowered to access support.
“Magtiwala lang na matutulungan, huwag mahihiyang magsalita kung meron nais iparating!” uttered by Mr. Supnet, who has been with the AFC for more than three decades. Through his relentless efforts and constant follow-ups, Mr. Supnet successfully facilitated the construction of a Rice Processing Center in Victoria. This facility has significantly improved rice production and post-harvest processes for local farmers. Additionally, he championed the provision of essential farming equipment, including hand tractors and harvesters, further easing the burden on small-scale farmers and increasing productivity.
Despite his steadfast commitment, Mr. Supnet and the IP community continue to face challenges in having their concerns addressed. One of the most pressing issues is the lack of response to the community’s requests, even after numerous attempts to raise them in meetings and consultations.
For instance, the IP community in Oriental Mindoro has long petitioned for the construction of a hanging bridge in Bansud. This crucial infrastructure would provide safer passage for residents and facilitate the transport of goods. Similarly, several farm-to-market roads are urgently needed to improve accessibility and economic opportunities for indigenous farmers. Unfortunately, these requests remain unheeded, leaving the community in a state of anticipation and struggle.
At the core of Mr. Supnet’s mission is his unwavering advocacy to be the voice of farmers, especially those of the IP community. He believes sustainable agricultural development should be inclusive, ensuring indigenous farmers are not left behind in policy discussions and program implementations.
With a steadfast resolve, he continues to push for the recognition of IP concerns, engaging with government agencies and policymakers to amplify their voices. His goal is to see a future where indigenous farmers in Mindoro are equipped with the necessary infrastructure, resources, and support to thrive in their agricultural endeavors.
Mr. Junior Supnet’s journey is a testament to the power of advocacy and perseverance. While challenges remain, his dedication serves as an inspiration to his fellow indigenous farmers and a call to action for the government and stakeholders to listen and respond to the needs of those who cultivate the land that feeds the nation. | Junry Danila
