#PCAFStories | The establishment of an abaca demonstration farm was proposed during the 2nd quarterly meeting of the National Sectoral Committee (NSC) on Fiber Crops, held online on May 15, 2025. The proposed farm aims to serve as a venue for farmer training, particularly in improving postharvest handling practices and enhancing drying facilities.Organized and facilitated by the Philippine Council for Agriculture and Fisheries (PCAF), the meeting also featured a report from Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority’s (PhilFIDA’s) Fiber Utilization and Technology Division (FUTD) regarding the development of a comprehensive Technology Roadmaps for Fiber Processing and Utilization.Meanwhile, PhilFIDA Director Arnold Atienza shared ongoing efforts to promote abaca through new technologies and collaborations with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas and DepEd to reintegrate abaca into national currency, while also implementing the Hibla Farming PS4 Project supporting development of piña, sericulture, sisal, and salago crops.The meeting also addressed critical industry developments, including the Abaca Disease Management Project in Eastern Visayas which has benefited over 1,200 farmers across 3,100 hectares, and rehabilitation efforts covering 462 hectares assisting nearly 1,800 beneficiaries.
